Description

Students pursuing the Honors Fellows distinction through the Texas A&M University Honors Program are required to complete a capstone, or culminating project, that demonstrates application of their learning to an in-depth project. To find out more about options to complete the capstone requirement, please visit http://tx.ag/Capstones. This form should be used for students who wish to use an existing departmental capstone for this requirement.

Students should consult with a University Honors Program advisor in the planning stages to seek approval for their capstone experience. To select departmental capstone, you must indicate how the requirements above will be met.

You may also wish to speak with an Honors Advisor about these options. To schedule an appointment with an advisor, please visit http://swan.tamu.edu/launch. If you have questions about capstones, please contact honors@tamu.edu.

Eligibility:
Honors Students in the University Honors Program are eligible to submit an Departmental Capstone application.

Guidelines
To meet Honors requirements, a capstone should:
  1. Have a proposal process that demonstrates synthesis of the background and theory of the field,
  2. Have a timeline describing when you will meet expectations and be evaluated,
  3. Be completed under the guidance of a faculty mentor (or similar expert), and
  4. Have extended commitment, either taking place over more than one semester or be an equivalent investment of time.
  5. Result in a scholarly product appropriate for the field,
  6. Include a public presentation (n.b. if a departmental capstone is used, the public presentation must be someplace more public than the class for which the project was completed),
Procedure
Meet with the professor, supervisor, or employer who will be overseeing your work to:
  • Address the questions listed above,
  • develop expectations and basis for evaluating your performance of the Honors-caliber work, and
  • submit your responses to this form.
  • You will need to register for UGST 497 in each semester that you are working on your capstone.
Once submitted, your Departmental Capstone application will be reviewed by University Honors Program staff for approval. Once approved, you should work with your mentor to complete the agreed work according to the timeline you submitted and provide a copy of your final scholarly product and notice of your public presentation to the University Honors Program.

Deadline
Generally, applications should be submitted for review long enough before the capstone begins so that you have time to register for the required UGST 497, and change your plans, if necessary. Retroactive applications are discouraged.

You will be emailed a copy of your completed Departmental Capstone application. You are strongly encouraged to keep this email for your records.
