How to Apply

The 2017-2018 application opens on June 1, 2017 and closes on September 18, 2017.

Application Process and Eligibility

Eligible students are invited to apply for the Undergraduate Research Scholars program each year between June and September. The application consists of two parts: (1) Submission of an online student information form, and (2) Submission of a structured proposal through an online system. After submitting a completed application, a student’s faculty research advisor is asked to submit approval for the project in an online system before the application can be fully reviewed by LAUNCH staff. Acceptance notifications are sent on a rolling basis through the first week of October.

Learn more about the eligibility and participation requirements here.

Don’t have a faculty research advisor? Attend one of our monthly Getting Started in Research workshops or other campus-wide events to get advice from faculty, staff and students currently involved in research activities. View our upcoming events schedule here.

Undergraduate Research Scholars Application: Part 1

Are you writing an individual or team thesis?

INDIVIDUAL THESIS: If you are not writing a joint thesis with other undergraduates, the registration form will ask you to continue as an Individual.

TEAM THESIS: If you are writing a joint thesis with other undergraduates (up to 5 members in a team), your group can be considered an Undergraduate Research Scholars Team. We define “writing a joint thesis” as an undergraduate research group working on a project under a single faculty advisor while co-authoring a single, common thesis.

If your research group wishes to apply as a team, each team member must do the following:

  • Individually complete Part 1 of the application, selecting "Continue as a Team"
  • Individually complete Part 2 of the application, submitting the same proposal document

Since every member of a team still has to complete all parts of this application, please coordinate the following with your team members and faculty advisor before starting the application:

  • First name, last name and email address of all team members
  • First name, last name, email address and department of the team’s faculty advisor
  • A single proposal title and proposal document
  • If research compliance is needed for the project, have all team members completed any necessary training and have they been added to the compliance protocol?
  • Which team member will be the designated Primary Contact?
Note: The Primary Contact for the team will be responsible for coordinating communication between LAUNCH: Undergraduate Research staff and other team members and submitting revised documents during the application review process. Additional responsibilities will arise once the team has been fully accepted into the program.
Research Compliance Screening

Projects involving human subjects, vertebrate animals or biohazards may require approval through the Research Compliance and Biosafety office. Review the Division of Research website to find information about research compliance and other training. Additional information about research compliance approval can be found in our FAQs.

All students pursuing the Undergraduate Research Scholars program must discuss research compliance with their faculty research advisor before submitting an application.

Thesis Timeline and Goals

Undergraduate Research Scholars are required to write the thesis progressively throughout the program. You will be asked to describe in detail your overall timeline and action plan for completing your thesis. Review program deadlines and expectations as well as the academic calendar with your faculty research advisor before completing this section of the application to make sure you can complete your thesis within the scope of the program.

Address the following questions in your response (be as detailed as possible):

  • When will you complete any required training?
  • When will you seek compliance approval (if needed)?
  • When will you complete your literature review?
  • When and how often will you meet with your faculty advisor?
  • When will you register for conferences or meetings?
  • When will you visit the Writing Center for help?
  • When will you analyze your data?
  • When will you schedule and complete any field work?
  • What milestones did you set out to accomplish?
  • How do you plan to make progress on your project independent of deadlines?
  • When will you set time aside to write each section of your thesis?
  • Do you have access to all necessary equipment, documents, and other resources? If not, when will you obtain all necessary materials for your project?

Undergraduate Research Scholars Application: Part 2

Once you have completed Part 1 (online registration form), you can proceed to Part 2 which calls for the submission of a structured proposal to the Scholars Thesis Submittal System (STSS). Proposal submissions must adhere to specific guidelines available on the Undergraduate Research Scholars Proposal page.

Note the following:

  • Proposals must receive approval from your faculty research advisor. Upon submission of your proposal, the Scholars Thesis Submittal System (STSS) will generate an email to your research advisor requesting approval of your proposal. Your faculty research advisor must approve your submission before your proposal can be reviewed by LAUNCH: Undergraduate Research staff.
  • Undergraduate Research staff will then review your proposal. The proposal will be reviewed by Undergraduate Research staff and must convince us of your ability to pursue the proposed project to a successful conclusion, and complete a thesis within the scope of the program (see Program Deadlines).
  • Corrections to proposals may be requested by Undergraduate Research to complete applications. Further information will be provided on the home page on the Scholars Thesis Submittal System (STSS). Decisions will be communicated via email through the first week of October 2017.
