Howdy! My name is Jake Fields, and I'm a Biochemistry and Genetics major from Dripping Springs, Texas. I've always been the annoying kid who had to tell everyone around him new science facts he learned from They Might Be Giants, so it was only natural to pursue scientific research in college. I'm particularly interested in communicating that research to the broader public, so that it can be practically utilized without the barrier that is often seen today between scientists and members of other branches of society.

With my major, I hope to go to medical school and eventually open up my clinic focusing on pediatric and adult endocrinology. I also - at some point - hope to get a Ph.D. in endocrinology as well. Along with all of this, being an author/ publishing my research has been on my to-do list in recent years. Through Explorations, I'll be able to learn how publications work and the effort of not just one person go into producing a successful journal. Even with all these things on my list, I still make room to have fun. In my free time, I love to listen to music, cook/bake, and work out!

During her undergraduate career, Ashley Smith decided to major in Genetics with a minor in Public Health. She believed that Genetics would provide a deeper understanding of the building blocks of life and the mechanisms that underpin living systems, while Public Health would teach her how to think systematically about large-scale health problems and the logistics of healthcare. In her sophomore year, she joined Dr. Jennifer Dulin's lab, which focuses on investigating how transplantation of neural progenitor cells can restore function after spinal cord injury (SCI) and characterizing the changes in neural circuitry that occur after SCI. This experience ultimately showed her that many current clinical therapies and treatments were first developed at the lab bench. After graduation, she plans to enroll in medical school with the goal of becoming a neurologist, specializing in neurocritical care.
